Week 2 Dropbox The criminal justice field is in place to not only hold those accountable for their actions but also to try and prevent further criminal activity from happening. One of the best ways to do so is to collect data and statistics on criminal activity across the nation. By collecting this data we can better know when and where crimes are happening and try to provide a solution to stopping them. However, people bring into question the accuracy and usefulness of crime statistics as they merely reflect the views of the policy makers. Two sources that collect and publish crime data and statistics are the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, and the National Crime Victim Survey (NCVS). The Uniform Crime Reporting program was created in 1930 when Congress saw the need to begin collecting statistics on crime in the nation. The UCR took and is still in full swing today, with approximately 18,000 law enforcement agencies (at all levels) providing crime data for the program. To provide uniformit y in reporting the FBI provides training, created standardized terminology, and provides numerous publications to participating law enforcement agencies. ( Schmalleger, P.33) This will further help any inaccuracies in the way police and the UCR collect and publish statistics. The traditional UCR program separates crime data into Part I and Part II offenses.
